After School Program:  Young Women Aware

Young Women Aware is an after-school leadership program.  YWA meets at Danville High School, Southview Middle School and Northridge Middle School.  The girls participate in activities that will help build their self esteem, improve their knowledge of their community, and help them set goals.

Rebecca Monson is the Program Coordinator.   Rebecca challenges the girls to think about their lives now and what they want to be in the future.  Violence prevention, leadership training and education play a big role in the future of our girls and in the program.

Summer program information is posted in May of each year.  Rebecca can be reached at Big Brothers Big Sisters by calling 446-6601 or email at rebecca.monson@bbbsvc.org

Young Women Aware is a project of Provena-United Samaritans Medical Center Foundation, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Vermilion County and Danville District #118.

Funding for this program is due in part to Provena/USMC Foundations annual fundraiser Festival of Trees.  To find out more about how you can help with this fundraiser go to www.provena.org/usmc/.

Young Women Aware has grown tremendously since 1997.  Young Women Aware began in October 1997 at Danville High School because of increased concerns for young women attending DHS and the issues the community faced with the increased teen births and increased high school drop out rates.
Fall 2001, Young Women Aware expanded to include North Ridge and South View Middle Schools.

Since 1997, the Young Women Aware program has awarded 22 graduates, college scholarships.

The goals of the programs are:

  • High School Graduation
  • College Attainment
  • Pregnancy Prevention with a focus on Abstinence

Young Women Aware is a collaboration with Provena United Samaritans Medical Center Foundation, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Vermilion County, and Danville District #118 Schools.

Transportation is provided by District 118 from the middle schools.

The program is available to all students at the schools and there is no cost to participate.

School Year Meetings are as follows:
